The HCG Diet

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) is a hormone found in high concentrations in pregnant women who are in their first trimester. An endocrinologist by the name of Dr. Albert T.W. Simeons discovered the link between use of this hormone and weight loss, in men and women alike, in the later half of the 20th century. Since then, the HCG diet has developed into three phases which include the use of oral HCG drops or injections in order to help increase metabolism and fat burning.

  • The first two days of the HCG diet plan require individuals to eat with abandon- yes, you read that correctly! The goal is to increase fat stores so the body is well prepared for the caloric drop that happens in the next phase.

  • The second phase lasts for a little more than two weeks and requires individuals to eat no more than 500 calories a day. It is important to note that in both phase one and phase two, patients are to absorb a prescribed amount of HCG before breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

  • Phase three lasts for two days and encourages patients to slowly increase their caloric intake without the use of HCG.

These variable phases repeat every 26 days and continue on, under the guidance and care of a knowledgeable medical practitioner.

The HCG diet does not exist in a vacuum of drops and calories. The foods patients choose must contain high quality nutrients and fit the regimen accurately. Additionally, patients are encouraged to stay well hydrated and exercise when their caloric limits increase. Working out on 500 calories is not ideal, but high calorie intake days can sustain a solid exercise routine.
